A single report may cause a ban if the report was genuine and the user was offended or threatened by the user whom they are reporting. The enforcement team is responsible for investigating all of these matters but they are human and sometimes get it wrong. Just because you report someone or get reported does not mean that you will automatically get banned. It just means that the enforcement team will take a look at your account more closely.
Then if you have done something wrong you will face a suspension or ban. There may be a certain reason behind the reporting of a user by another user. All the users are not of an equal mindset and they may react accordingly. Their irregular behavior may not be liked by another user and so they might be reported by the other users. In the report, the reporting user can accuse the user of certain activities that are against the community guidelines of the network.
The enforcement team will look into the matter and finally after tracing the faults of the reported user, they will decide on whether a ban or suspension is necessary. No, it is impossible to know who the user was who reported another user. The network has not allowed users to gather such information as it can become a reason for a fight in the real world quite quickly. All reports are made anonymously and if you report someone they will not know that it is you.
If they recently had a fight with you then they might be able to guess but they would not KNOW for sure. Reporting other users is very much confidential and only enforcement team members can access such information. A user can report any other user just because they are highly offended with that user and not able to tolerate the offenses any longer.
Instead of getting into a personal and petty argument, the user may report the user with whom they have issues. The problem will be resolved soon if it is genuine and not biased. There are some pretty serious reasons for which a user can be reported by any other user and then there will be some reports that are not bad enough to warrant a suspension or ban. The enforcement team takes the reports very seriously and makes sure that anyone who is making the Xbox Live platform dangerous or harmful for others is removed.
If someone is harassing any other user while playing a game then the user will likely report the account from where they are being harassed and that account will be suspended for a time. If someone makes a threat of violence or urges a person to do violence to themselves then that is also an offense that will result in a suspension or ban. If you are abiding by all the community guidelines of the network, then you are not going to be banned, even if somebody is reporting your account.
The enforcement team will look at your account and if you did not do the things that you were reported for then nothing will happen to you. You need to maintain the decorum of the Xbox Live platform where there are many users from around the world.
If your behavior, code of conduct and other things are fine, then you will remain safe and nothing will happen to your Xbox Live account. They also go out and game in the system. They go out and play Uno, Halo, Call of Duty, all the top games and they're looking for bad behaviour. They're not enticing it, but when they see it, they're capable of taking action to make it a safer place.
The second thing they handle is some of the policies around privacy and security-of-user information. As I mentioned in my talk, it's a little bit about what are the reasonable expectations that a user might have about being marketed to and when are we going to hand that data over and when are we not.
Those policies and procedures are basically subsets at the corporate level. The third thing my team takes care of is any law enforcement requests. Subpoenas or things of that nature, where we might be able to help in an investigation. Maybe an Xbox is stolen, maybe there's information on the Xbox that law enforcement might need.
Toulouse: The incidents that we usually deal with is, a user comes to us and says, "My Xbox was stolen. Occasionally, there might be a case where somebody claims they did not commit a crime because they were playing Halo, in which case the subpoena might take the stance of, were they playing Halo at the time?
It's that type of stuff, but it's pretty rare. Toulouse: I can't go into the details that we provide to satisfy the subpoenas but in general we can provide law enforcement with the information they need.
Toulouse: It's a tiny fraction of the overall user base [of more than 12 million]. I remember it was less than one per cent of the total user base, but it's something we process every day. There are a lot that are inaccurate and we try to get that out to the user base, that they're wasting their time [if they make inaccurate complaints].
Toulouse: We usually don't go into specifics on the team, but what I can say is that across the worldwide service and all those different locations I've got several dozen people who are doing stuff at all times. We add more periodically when we get spikes in service, like at Christmas when there's more people playing and we get more complaints.
How much of that do you do? Toulouse: I view my role as I'm kind of always on duty, so I play a couple of hours a day, maybe more. I'm usually too busy for that to be business hour work, I usually do that when I'm at home. Messages: 5, Likes Received: 0. Mastar Forerunner. Messages: 1, Likes Received: 0. E93 Guest. It's not , people actually sometimes do have innapropriate Gamertags. It's probably around 30, I'm guessing, cause it can't be that easy too. And it would take a heck of a lot of people to get you to change it. Not many people have the patience for it.
As to it working, I'm not sure, but I've gotten about 3 messages from friends that want me to file complaints against their Gamertag, so there might be a chance that it works.
